Water, Our Focus
Upper South Creek Pipelines
Water, Our Focus
Project Background
The population of Western Sydney is growing. This has been spurred by the development of the Western Sydney International Airport and of the surrounding areas including the South West Growth Area (SWGA) and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Growth Area (WSAGA).
Located in the suburb of Kemps Creek, at the junction of Kemps Creek and South Creek, the AWRC will produce advanced quality recycled water suitable for release to the Nepean River in line with the Hawkesbury-Nepean nutrient removal framework. The treatment plant will produce a very high quality of water, close to drinking water standard. In addition, there is considerable opportunity for the AWRC to enable a recycled water supply to customers in and around the catchment of various uses including residential, commercial, agriculture and open space. Upper South Creek pipelines consists of 17Km of treated water which comprised of OD914 MSCL and DN900 PE via open trench, HDD and micro tunnel install and 24Km of the brine pipeline which consists of open trench excavation, HDD and micro tunnel install. The pipe line works also have installation of a valve site at either end of the pipeline prior to discharge.

Scope Of Works
Killard were awarded the construction of 7km of DN375 PVC of the Brine Line and 5Km of OD914 MSCL of the treated water line which included Sintalock and Sintajoints with the associated welding, weld inspections and weld testing.
Some of the main features were as follows:
-
- Reinforced concrete encasement of both pipelines at stormwater crossings
- Supply and management of Traffic Control
- Construction of 16 Cast in situ scour pits
- Construction of 20 precast AV pits
- Construction of 4 precast jetting pits
- 12 bore connections
- Construction of valve sites at the end of the treated water and end of the brine line, these works included the FRP of flow meter pits, control valve pits, dual line flanged arrangements of appurtenances, etc.
- Works on the valve sites also included bulk earthworks, retaining wall works, fencing, footpaths, pavement and asphalt works.
Outcome / Key Features
The 7Km of the brine pipeline was through both residential and throughfare streets of Fairfield where traffic management was paramount to a successful outcome of the project, interaction and submission of TGS for contra flow, stop/slow and road closures with both our client and Fairfield Council to ensure a smooth undertaking of works and one which provided the least impact to the community.
Utilisation of road closures of school zones during school holidays to ensure no impact to the schools.
The 5Km of the treated water line was carried out on the side of a TfNSW road reserve, through residential streets of Wallacia and through farmland.
1Km of the OD914 pipe install was carried out in restricted 6m corridor where pre planning and methodology agreement was essential to ensuring a safe and quality outcome.
1Km of the treated water was required to be carried out under a night shift full road closure on a TfNSW road which required months of planning and approvals, and this scope was completed ahead of time to reduce the impact to the community.
Numerous lift studies were required throughout the project to ensure safe lifting operations
Construction was completed within program and budget.
Stakeholder management along with community notification and interaction was key to the success of this project, Killard Infrastructure scored highly in all community audits.
6 crews on site to ensure program was maintained.
