Project Background
The NSW Government is delivering Sydney Metro West – a new underground metro railway which will double rail capacity between Parramatta and Sydney CBD, linking new communities to rail services and supporting employment growth and housing supply. The Gamuda and Laing O’Rourke Consortium (GLC) is delivering the Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package. The project involves nine kilometres of twin metro rail tunnels between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park, excavation for two new metro stations, a stabling and maintenance facility at Clyde and a precast facility at Eastern Creek. Killard was awarded the works associated with the Water Discharge Line in the Parramatta CBD.

Scope Of Works
This work is required to connect the water treatment plant outfall to the discharge point downstream of the weir in the Parramatta River.

- Supply and installation of full water treatment plant discharge route as detailed in the temporary works design provided in this scope.
- Provision for breaking into the existing stormwater system in the predetermined location at the George and Charles Street intersection.
- Provision of shelters for field welding of PE pipes.
- Any additional excavation that may be required to provide access for butt welding HPVC pipes on site.
- Potholing of existing services through NDD method.
- Full trenching excavation for the entire route will be required including excavation around live services.Supply and placement of suitable backfill material as per the design.
- Temporary reinstatement of paving and road surfacing along the trenched route.
- Provision of temporary works as required.
- Provision of temporary road coverings and fixings as suitable and approved.
- All excavated material stored, separated and stockpiled on site and disposed of by GLC. Material excavated Via wet vac was dispose offsite to a licensed waste facility.Provision of all required traffic management along the route, this will include applying for the appropriate ROLs and producing relevant TMPs in advance of the works.
Outcome / Key Features
The location of the work for WTP discharge line installation along with pits excavations is on the George Street starting from Horwood Place to Charles Street. There are several substantial crossings including: Existing High-Pressure Gas and Transmission, Telecom, stormwater, water, sewer, LV electrical cable, road intersection, property services in the whole alignment. The depth and extend of the services are to be identified by the Killard prior to the excavation as per scope of works. Potholing report for all the services located was generated and provided to GLC along with alternative solutions for the works based on number of services that were supposed to encounter on the actual alignment
A proposed solution was provided to do a combination of Horizontal Directional Drilling and pen trenching to avoid the impact of the traffic, existing services and noise complaints from the residents due to the location of the works in the CBD area of Parramatta.
Any works proposed on George Street was completed during night works as part of restrictions along with ceasing of any high noise activity by 11pm which Killard complied with during the entire construction period.
A detailed Traffic Management Plan was developed by Killard and provided to the head contractor for review and approval. Traffic was managed along the work area with a partial lane closure, including a reduced speed zone. Temporary traffic lights or stop/slow controllers were used on two-way streets and at intersections.
