Project Background
The project scope involved the installation of a new critical section of Sydney Water pipeline during the RMS upgrade of The Northern Road (Stage 2) by Lendlease. Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) implemented a program of works to upgrade 34 kilometres of The Northern Road, between Narellan and Penrith. The upgrade formed part of the joint NSW and Commonwealth Government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan to upgrade road infrastructure in western Sydney over ten years.
This total project was assessed as Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) meaning the Minister for Planning had determined that it is essential to the State. Our involvement was crucial to meet the construction timeline for Sydney Water’s scheduled shutdown of the existing pipe and subsequent cut-in and connection to the new system, concurrent with construction of the roadway segment.

Scope Of Works
The following construction works were delivered by Killard:
-
- Trenching & shoring depths from 1.5m-7m of over 8.6Km of SCL and DICL pipes.Installation and welding of steel pipe ranging between OD508 (730m), OD660 (1800m), OD813 (500m) and OD1050 (500m) all plain end pipes, jointing via butt welds and weld collars.
- Reinforced Concrete encasement of over 2800m of this welded pipe.
- Installation of DN600 DICL pipes (4100m) and DN450 DICL pipes (600m) Installation of flanged valve arrangements at 1Km intervals along the full alignment.
- Installation of cast-in situ scour pits, installation of precast Stop Valves, Air Valves and Hydrant pits.
- Open cut up to 7m deep under Thompsons Creek.
- Works completed under a tight working corridor to allow for construction of the Northern Rd upgrade alongside the watermain installation.
- Connections to live mains.
Outcome / Key Features
Works completed safely and to a high-quality standard, works completed in line with overall Principal Contractor’s road construction program without causing any delays to roadworks completion. Killard crews (up to 6 in number) worked in collaboratively with the client in restricted areas to ensure a positive outcome for the overall works package.
Killard crews were recognised with various safety awards throughout the construction of the pipeline.
