Project Background
Wingecarribee Shire Council embarked on a program of water main renewals to ensure continuity of supply to residents and provide water for bushfire fighting. Council decided to replace the 60-year-old cast iron trunk main as it is a critical element for the transfer of water between Exeter and Moss Vale but after 60 years of service was showing signs of aging. The new pipe is larger and capable of greater capacity, lighter, easier to transport and with fewer joints (less likely to leak or fault).

Scope Of Works
2.7 kilometres of HDPE OD500 SDR9 PN20 water main installation along with all the appurtenances required. Pressure testing and chlorination of the main prior to commissioning Connections to the existing main Restoration to Council and TfNSW standards
Outcome / Key Features
Original plan for replacement was to pipe burst the existing line however due to the shallow depth (risk of heaving) and proximity to a TfNSW road, the decision was made to use a combination of open cut and directional drilling. The project was mostly delivered with two crews working day and night in different areas of the pipeline.Some of the highlights of the project included successful negotiations and approvals with TfNSW road department, record time completion and accommodating pipeline runs to maintain water supply at all times.
