Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade

Water, Our Focus

Project Background

The Richmond precinct has a forecast growth that will exceed the capacity of the current wastewater servicing infrastructure. Sydney Water currently services this precinct by two independent wastewater systems (Richmond and North Richmond).
A new pump station at SPS 0096 and new pressure main are to be constructed to transfer flows to Richmond WRP. The Richmond WRP is to be augmented to increase capacity for North Richmond and the precinct growth forecast. After successful operation of Richmond WRP, the North Richmond WWTP works are to be decommissioned.

Scope Of Works

Pipeline
The scope of the Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade (RSWU) works involves the upgrading and amplification of the North Richmond and Richmond wastewater network system including the transfer all flows to the Richmond WRP, as described below:
Pressure Main: A 7km new wastewater pressure main (DN560 PE100 PN16 pipeline), to transfer all North Richmond flows from the New SPS to the Richmond WRP. The Pressure Main requires trenchless dual crossings of the Hawkesbury River, Redbank Creek, and the Richmond rail line.
Gravity Main Amplification: Amplification of the wastewater reticulation network in the North Richmond system by way of new gravity wastewater pipelines
Gravity Sewer 520 m of DN225.
Gravity Sewer 48 m of DN300.
Gravity Sewer 184 m of DN375
Gravity Sewer 170 m of DN300
Amplification of DN225 to DN300
Network Rectification: Rectification and modification work on identified emergency relief structures (ERSs) and maintenance holes in the North Richmond system.

Pump station The new pumping station with increased pump capacity (90L/s to 250 L/s) to replace existing pumping station SP0096 at North Richmond WWTP to the Richmond WRP, as described below:
Site preparation (including vegetation clearing)
Relocate minor services,Remove first flush system, Remove existing sludge pump system
Excavate a new wet well (approximately 20 m deep)
Construct new pumping station (250 L/s to transfer to Richmond WRP)
Replace existing pump with two new 90L/s wet weather pumps to retransfer flows to the storage lagoon in North Richmond
Connect the new pumping station to existing inlet maintenance hole.

Outcome / Key Features

This project offers significant challenges that will need careful planning and managing:

working on live operating sites and ensuring there are no unplanned disruptions to operations or maintenance activities;
all works will be undertaken in close proximity of communities including residents, businesses, schools, live traffic, pedestrians, existing live underground and overhead utility assets;
and the need for detailed traffic management planning and management;
environmentally challenging areas such as wetlands and waterways;
space constrained work areas, especially inside the treatment plant.
