Project Background

Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail connects Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia with a 12-kilometre two-way track and 16 light rail stops.

It connects the Parramatta CBD to Westmead Health Precinct, CommBank Stadium Powerhouse Parramatta, the largest museum in NSW, Parramatta Square and PHIVE Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, three Western Sydney University campuses at Westmead, Parramatta and Rydalmere.

By 2026, around 28,000 people are expected to use the Parramatta Light Rail every day, with an estimated 130,000 people living within walking distance of the 16 light rail stops.

Scope Of Works

Parramatta Connect (CPB-Downer JV) engaged Killard Infrastructure to relocate / upgrade all the existing services in Church St between Ross St and Palmer St affected by the future construction of the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1.

The following construction works were involved in the project:

- Relocation of existing DN225 and DN100 gas service across Church St and carry out the connections along Jemena team.
- Relocation and upsize of existing Sydney Water sewer with the installation of 2 new manholes in Victoria Rd and Church St.
- Concrete encasement and upgrade of the existing Telstra conduits
- Construction of two new Telstra concrete pits.
- Upgrade of Council stormwater lines
- Restoration of all the trenches

Outcome / Key Features

The works were carried out on days and nights within schedule. Despite the highly congested area with existing services and the heavy traffic, the works were complete on time as expected by the client. Killard coordinated the works with the principal personnel as well as the Utility Asset Owners. In addition, Killard provided all traffic control services (Traffic Control Plans, Traffic Management Plans, Road Occupancy Licences management).

The delivery of this utility package of works presented significant challenges including the interfacing with external stakeholders, other contractors working at the same work fronts, the requirement of detailed planning when working at busy intersection. Killard prepared, continuously monitored and updated as required a detailed program for each work front location.
