Project Background
The Nowra Bridge – Princes Highway upgrade project consisted in the construction of a new four-lane bridge for the Northbound traffic, the modification of the existing Northbound bridge to become the Southbound bridge and the re-purpose of the old Heritage bridge for community use. Killard was engaged to deliver the upgrade of the North Nowra Surcharge Sewer (NNSM) asbestos main installed under the original Northbound bridge in 1981.

Scope Of Works
The works involved the replacement of Lyrebird sewer:

- Supply and installation of DN300 DICL & OD560 HDPE Pipelines
- Supply and Installation of North Nowra Surcharge Mains works involving 350m of OD505 steel pipeline under the existing Nowra Bridge and connections, removal and off-site disposal of existing 100 AC Mains across the Bridge.
Outcome / Key Features
This project presented significant challenges with a number of high risks activities. Killard’s engineering team worked on a detailed innovative methodology to ensure our crews worked safely over water while the impact to the environment and community was minimal. Killard’s methodology included scaffold installation on either abutment of the bridge, works using a bridge specific EWP on night shift to avoid traffic disruption, specialised engineered brackets with rollers to allow the pipe travel from one side to the other, use of winches, a sailing rope and a steel cone fabricated for purpose or the design of expansion joints to withhold the movement of the bridge due to temperature changes. Upon commissioning of the new main, the existing asbestos main was removed from the bridge with the use of floating barges, an EWP and a spider crane.
