Project Background
The new water & sewer mains and pumping station project for Eurobodalla Council was initiated to accommodate future infrastructure including the new exhibition centre in Batemans Bay, NSW. The new gravity sewer main discharges the flow to a new pump station. Flow is then pumped over to the other side of town to be discharged at a downstream location near the wastewater treatment plant. In addition, a new DN450 DICL trunk watermain was installed to upgrade the existing asbestos watermain.

Scope Of Works
The project was a Design and Construct contract with the extent of the works as per the following:

- Supply and installation of 750m of DN150, DN225 and DN300 uPVC sewerage gravity mains and associated DN1050 manholes.
- Supply and construction of a new 3.2m diameter sewerage pump station with associated valve chamber, flowmeter pit, inlet manhole, pipework, mechanical works, electrical works including switchboards and SCADA, odour control system, and access roadworks.
- Supply and installation of 1Km of sewer rising main HDPE OD225.
- Supply and installation of 800m of DN450 DICL Trunk watermain.
- Testing and commissioning.
Outcome / Key Features
The project involved multi-disciplined aspects including earthworks, civil works, watermain and sewer main pipeworks, FRP works, mechanical and electrical works. Killard’s Project Team encountered many challenges throughout the delivery. A well-thought construction methodology for a 8m deep excavation in water charged sandy ground of the pump station wet well and associated structures was proposed.
Usage of sheet piling technology with 9m long sheets and engineered bracing system for the shaft excavation Installation of a continuous 24/7 dewatering system Microtunnel from the last upstream manhole into the wet well excavation HDD from the pump station to the discharge gravity manhole across town where the existing gravity system was upgraded and upsized.
The works were running simultaneously with the construction of the exhibition centre causing clashes with newly installed services. Killard proposed value engineering solutions such as using laser guided bore technology to cross newly installed cables allowing both projects to be delivered without any delays.
