Project Background
The town of Young has a population of approximately 7,200 people and is serviced by a sewerage scheme that comprises a conventional gravity sewer reticulation system, with sewage transfer to the Young Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) via a gravity trunk main.
Works under this Contract related to the construction of a new larger diameter gravity sewer main to allow conveyance of projected future flows. The work involved replacing the existing main with a larger pipe diameter. This sewer main services part of the light industrial area that fronts Boorowa St between McKenzie St and Clarke St.

Scope Of Works
The scope of works included the design and construction of a sewer gravity main:

- Services location and geotechnical investigation
- Site survey and final design.
- Supply and installation of 590m of DN450 Polypropylene (PP) pipe by open cut trenching.
- Supply and installation of 242m of DN450 GRP pipes by micro tunnelling.
- Supply and installation of 14 new DN1200 precast manholes.
- Reconnection of 26 property service lines to the new main from the existing main to be made redundant.
- Testing, commissioning and connection to the existing network.
Outcome / Key Features
After completing the site investigations, Killard’s value engineering proposal offered an optimal design with lesser impacts on the community and the environment, allowing the project to be completed on time despite the unexpected high number of wet weather events throughout the construction phase.
Killard’s proposal included under boring the main intersections and the portion of the works under the business Mitre 10 on nightshift to minimise the impact to businesses and traffic.
Due to the amount of rain, unusual high level of groundwater needed to be managed. Killard implemented stringent environment protocols and successfully carried out all dewatering without any incident. Killard managed the property service transfer without issues or adverse impact to residents and businesses.
