Goulburn Reuse Scheme – Irrigation
Project Background
Goulburn Mulwaree Council is enhancing community water resilience through the Southern Highlands Water Reuse Infrastructure Scheme (SHWRIS). This initiative aims to improve drought resilience for playing fields and recreational spaces by using high-quality treated water for irrigation. This approach will decrease reliance on potable water and bolster water security, ensuring that Goulburn’s facilities and parks remain in excellent condition year-round.
The Goulburn Reuse Scheme, a major step forward in sustainability and resource management, involves installing new irrigation systems across local parks and sporting fields, with Killard handling the construction. By utilizing treated effluent—of a quality comparable to potable water—the scheme addresses the Council’s challenges with water management during droughts. This solution not only maintains the health and safety of the recreational areas but also highlights the Council’s dedication to sustainable practices.

Pipeline Installation

- Lay over 20 kilometres of polyethylene irrigation pipelines across 25 hectares.
- Pipe sizes range from 63mm to 200mm.
- Ensure the network automatically feeds over 1,500 sprinklers via the installation of over 200 solenoids.
- Construction of Concrete Reservoirs
- Construct four concrete reservoirs.
- Increase total site storage capacity by over 670 kilolitres (KL).
- Equip all tanks with potable water backup and inlet control valves to prevent overflowing.
- Installation of Pumping Stations
- Install four new pumping stations housed in site sheds.
- Ensure stations work in parallel with irrigation controllers.
- Connect to the Council’s SCADA system via telemetry for remote monitoring and control.
- Ensure the entire system is automated for efficient operation.
- Integration with SCADA System
- Ensure irrigation controllers communicate with the Council’s SCADA system.
- Use telemetry for real-time data exchange and system control.
Outcome / Key Features
The SHWRIS will utilise high-quality recycled water from the Goulburn wastewater treatment facility to irrigate an additional 7 sporting fields. This initiative will enhance drought resilience, reduce potable water demand, and support the phased Goulburn Reuse Scheme (GRS), which will eventually cover 19 residential areas.
