Project Background
Cobar Shire Council embarked on a program of water main renewals in response to the deteriorating condition of the existing town water pipeline to replace the system’s old cast iron pipes.
The new pipework was to alleviate the problems some residents were experiencing with discoloured water due to the build up of the deposits in the old pipes. Some parts of the pipeline were also experiencing regular blockages.

Scope Of Works
Approximately 7km of the town pipeline consisted of cast iron pipes which repeatedly experienced a build-up of deposits that resulted in discoloured water for some residents. Not only were sections of pipeline prone to blockages and breaks, but the Council also had a focus on improvements to bring the network up to a suitable standard and quality to provide the necessary flows for firefighting if required.
Killard Infrastructure was engaged to undertake the water main replacement project for over 7km of pipeline (DN100 to DN200) off the back of experience and successful delivery water main renewal program in Dubbo, Goulburn and Cootamundra. With Cobar in drought conditions, Killard recycled and reused the water from the pipe disinfection for the vacuum-jetter combination truck for dust suppression and jetting activities.
Outcome / Key Features
This project demonstrated our ability to successfully deliver regional water main replacement projects.
Innovative solutions included the use laser guided boring with pipejacking and the concrete encasement of pipeline 3.4m beneath the railway line.
Immediate appreciation of the works completed by Killard from the community with higher quality potable water through their taps at home.
